Most Things Don't Matter

 

Most things don't matter. How focusing on less gets you more.


Hear me out.

You have a finite amount of time and energy every day. The things competing for that time are effectively infinite. Emails, requests, obligations, opportunities, distractions all expand to fill every gap you leave open. And most of them won't move your life forward by a single inch.

The people who get the most done aren't doing more things. They're just ruthless about which things actually deserve their attention and have learned to ignore everything else.

Here's the principle I use. At any level of my life, I can name 3 to 5 things that genuinely matter. Not tasks. Priorities. Areas. If I could get nothing else done, these are the things I would focus on.

For my life right now:

1. Earn a living (my job)

2. Staying healthy (diet, sleep, activity)

3. Time for the people and activities I care about

That's the whole list. Everything I do either serves one of those three things, or it's a candidate for the bin.

Notice what didn't make the cut for my life. A perfect inbox. Every meeting someone wanted to schedule. Obligations I felt vaguely guilty about declining. Those things feel urgent. They're just not priorities.

The rule works at every level. What are your 3 priorities for this year? This month? This week? Today? Each level flows from the one above it. Yearly priorities shape weekly ones. Weekly ones shape daily ones. Tasks emerge at the bottom, finally grounded in something real.

Why 3 to 5 and not just 3? Sometimes life is genuinely complicated. Three is the ideal because it demands real honesty. But 4 or 5 distinct areas can legitimately compete for your attention. What you don't want to become is the person with 12 priorities, wondering why nothing gets done. When everything matters, nothing does.

So pick your 3. Maybe 4 or 5. Write them down. Then look at everything on your plate and ask honestly: does this serve any of them?

If the answer is no, you have your direction.
